Aliyev Puts Putin In His Place

Tell me how you apologize, and I'll tell you who you are.

The President of Azerbaijan, having waited two days, carefully put Putin in his place. He was not at all surprised by this, because the format of 'explanations' with Aliyev, chosen by Putin, says a lot about the latter's personality, but does little to help find a dignified way out of a delicate situation.

Tell me how you apologize, and I'll tell you who you are. Personally, these apologies evoked only one association for me, and a literary one (Pushkin's): "A weak and sly ruler..., inadvertently warmed by glory, reigned over us then."

Putin apologizes as if back in the old days of St. Petersburg he took lessons from Nevzorov in his courses on the "art of insulting." First, a long, vague pause, during which his media proxies litter the information space with a dunghill of crude lies, and then a call to Baku in the style of “I forgive everyone who I owe.”

Were such antics necessary? I don’t think so. What happened cannot be undone, and unfortunately, similar things happen to many, so a rational reaction would be quick and laconic words of regret about the tragedy with a promise to sort things out and compensate.

But this is if you do not take into account the personal factor. This is for a strong and self-confident ruler. But for a “weak and cunning” one, this is exactly how it is – with grimaces and jibes: forgive us for what happened to us, but it has nothing to do with us.

Apologized – like blowing his nose.
